How much does it cost?

Prices vary by the specifics of your yard, the material we use to install our raised beds and the size of your garden. Our garden installation is very affordable compared to equivalent landscaping features.

Our weekly maintenance prices are competitive with "mow-and-blow" landscape care alternatives. In addition, our customers can offset part or all of their current produce budget while receiving healthier and more delicious fruits and vegetables. Basically, if you want to convert much or all of your yard care into food cultivation, we can bring tangible value out of your land and landscaping budget that would otherwise be purely ornamental, and meanwhile we save you the cost and hassle of your grocery errands.

If you are interested in receiving a more specific quote, please contact us to set up a yard survey so we can evaluate the specifics of your location.  Click here to find the Farmscape branch closest to you or use our Quick Contact form.

What do I get for this price?

Farmscape focuses on growing annual vegetables, a labor-intensive gap in conventional landscaping services. For a flat monthly fee, we manage all aspects of your organic-method vegetable garden, from planning, planting, and replanting, to pest management and constant soil amendment. In weekly visits we will monitor your crop progress, rotate crops between seasons, weed, trim, tie off, rotate crops, tune your irrigation, and resolve most garden problems. We will work with you to harvest vegetables as they are ready, though we encourage you to harvest some items for maximum freshness before preparing your meals. You can rest assured that your vegetables are healthy and fresh, and that your farm practices are environmentally friendly and socially responsible.

Do you offer consulting?

Yes.  Farmscape offers one-on-one garden consultations to households located within our service areas. We'll send one of our highly trained service managers to offer you advice on soil fertility, garden location, planting schedules, non-chemical pest control, and any other problems your garden is facing.

Do you offer alternative maintenance packages, say monthly visits?

No. We've found weekly maintenance to be necessary for a garden's success. We offer consulting at an hourly rate if you need tutorials now and again to aid your own efforts at gardening.

Can I put a garden... on my roof? on my deck? on my balcony?

We strongly recommend installing gardens into open, well-drained soil in your front or back yard. We occasionally make exceptions if the circumstances are right, but we've never seen a container garden on any hard surface match the performance of those open to the ground. Contact with dirt is good for drainage and aids in the rapid establishment of your soil ecosystem -- worms and microbes make their way into your new soil from below.

Is Farmscape organic?

Our business takes seriously the logic and ethos of organic farming. It would be cost prohibitive for us to pay the USDA to officially certify each of Farmscape's backyard gardens as organic, and as a result we are not USDA Certified Organic.

Still, we use only organic inputs in our installation and maintenance. What does that mean?

  • We do not use synthetic chemical fertilizers, and instead rely on fertilizer products traditionally classified as organic, including composted manures, feather meal, bone and blood meal, bat guano, etc.
  • We preferentially source organic seeds and starts. The overwhelming majority of plants we grow in your backyard started as organically grown seeds or starts. 0% of our seeds are genetically modified organisms, and over 90% of them are open pollinated.

  • We use only Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) approved disease and pest control products. All products that are OMRI certified are approved for use in USDA Organic agricultural production.

What about pets or pests... dogs? cats? deer? raccoons? neighbors?

We've dealt with almost every type of pet or pest problem, there's always some solution. Securing your garden is usually a matter of your own price tolerance -- feel free to discuss such issues with us by phone, or on a free site survey.

How much produce can I expect?

We make no guarantee of yield. We do estimate that our gardens should average at least 2.5 pounds of produce per square foot per year and our garden managers now carry scales to measure harvests so that we can more accurately forecast yield in future seasons. However, harvest volumes will inevitably vary greatly by yard, and by crop selection.

Will you maintain my... fruit trees? grass? flower bed? edible or inedible?

Unlikely. We specialize in edible annuals that are grown in raised beds. For most other gardening or landscaping we are usually able to recommend other service providers we work with -- feel free to ask for a referral.

If you want us to look after potted herbs or dwarf fruit trees, it's worth inquiring. We can occasionally accommodate such requests.

What can I grow?

Please see our crop catalog -- note the season. These are crops available rapidly in our nursery, chosen for their success in the Los Angeles climate zones. We sometimes take custom requests. Depending on circumstance, we might bill extra for plants that are rare or complicated to grow. Sometimes we are unable to satisfy a custom crop request.

Are you a nonprofit?

Farmscape is a environmentally and socially responsible for-profit business.

Are you hiring?

We are always accepting resumes and cover letters. Please forward documents to employment@farmscapegardens.com

Do you franchise?

Expansion is always under consideration. Please use the Quick Contact form to make a formal request in the "Comment or Question" field.

Do you service my address?

You can view our current service zones. Even if we do not currently service your area, we very much appreciate site survey requests because we use these requests to decided where we will expand new service coverage as we are able. If you request a site survey and you are outside our current service zones, we will follow up with you as soon as we are in your area.

Will you take over my current garden?

Occasionally we inherit old gardens. We strongly prefer raised beds. Please request a site survey, and we will take a look. Often we will still need to bill for labor and supplies to rehabilitate your garden and make it ready for our service methods.

Do you work with schools?

Yes.  With school budgets currently facing major shortages, it has been difficult for schools to invest in enrichment activities such as school gardens. Nevertheless, we have worked with several schools and have found a way to make our services affordable to schools given their current budgetary constraints, including Captain Raymond Collins Elementary School in Long Beach, El Roble Intermediate School in Claremont and Saint Philip the Apostle School in Pasadena. Please contact us via webform, email or phone, and we will put you in touch with someone on our staff who specializes in work with school gardens.
